Penobscot East staff contribute expertise to  Stonington-Deer Isle High School instructor Tom Duym who is implementing a stellar marine trades program.  Subjects include efficient lobster boat design, marine ecology, traditional and modern techniques of wood boatbuilding, inquiry and problem-solving approaches in science and technology, practical labs in and on the water expose to the rudiments of chart work and local piloting. We focus on assisting with practical use of the marine compass, charts and basic use of electronic aides to navigation.  In addition, we help with the basic instruction of International and Inland rules while operating a vessel on the coastal waters of Maine.
