Sunday, July 27 Deer Isle Congregational Church 3:00
High fuel costs and low lobster prices are stressing
the island's lobster industry with ripples already being
felt throughout the island. Join us for a sundae social
and participate in a conversation about the realities
of fuel, bait, the Canadian dollar, whale rope rules --
and learn about a day out fishing from dawn 'til dusk.
How can we work together as a community in facing
these challenges?
Monday, August 11 Reach Performing Arts Center.
Chowder supper 5:00-6:00 Discussion 6:00-8:00
Lobster is over 90% of our fishing income on the island:
that's the good news --- and the bad news. One first
step toward diverisification is the way our clammers have
revived their industry through community management.
Cod and haddock were once part of our fishery. Come
participate in a dialogue about what is being done to
rebuild diversity in our fisheries portfolio and what you
– fishermen and non-fishermen – can do to be part of
these ambitious plans.
Sunday, August 17 Fishermen's Friend 5-7:00
Appetizers and cash bar
Join us for a showing of the film that Cecily Pingree of
North Haven has produced for Penobscot East Resource
Center. Through interviews with several Downeast fishermen,
it provides insight into fishermen's knowledge,
their values for the waters they fish and the communities
they live in. Discussion about the state of fishing and the
potential that community-based action holds for securing
a future for fishing communities will follow.
