Past & Current Interns

Penobscot East believes that qualified interns can make a huge contribution to our effectiveness. Like most non-profits, we must stretch our resources and value the role that interns are playing in all of our programs

Since 2009 we have collaborated with College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor  on an internship program, COA students are required to have interning experience and the college provides our interns financial support. We design the internships to complement their academic studies and provide a relevant full time job experience which has a direct bearing on their career ambitions. A COA internship must be at least ten weeks (400 hours) and not more than a year.

In 2009 COA interns Alice Anderson contributed to managing the Zone C Lobster Hatchery, and Kipp Quinby designed and taught aspects of the Community Fisheries Action Roundtable (CFAR) program,

In 2010 Kipp returned to develop a CFAR high school curriculum component with a focus on marine ecology, and Evie Smith is with us for two semesters assisting Aaron Dority create and manage the Community Supported Fisheries and related communications

We encourage internship programs in conjunction with other colleges and universities. In 2009 we welcomed Katrina Giese,  a MS candidate in Resource Management and Conservation from Antioch New England.  Katrina helped to set up Downeast  Groundfish Initiative’s fisheries sector management.

In summer 2010, Marianna Bradley will join us to this new sector (a novel groundfish co-management system) in eastern Maine and related the DEGI Sentinel Fishery. Her internship is sponsored by Duke University Nicholas School of management where she is a candidate.
